Mountains / Natural Reservations and natural preserved objectives

Rarau and Giumalau Maountains very close mountains situated at the north of Bistrita Valley where this river winds and crosses the Eastern Carpathians. Their moderate height (1.653 m in Rarau Mountains and 1.857 m in Giumalau Mountains), the beauty of the scenery (the karst relief, forestry and geological reservations), the multitude of paths with smooth slopes and table lands led to the growth of the number of mountain trips. Rarau Mountain is a touristic symbol for Bucovina of which Geo Bogza once wrote:“There can be places where you might find higher mountains or tumultuous rivers, the sea or the ocean, but here the Rarau Mountain stands for the world’s fundamental dimension, life and history’s cosmic side.”

Devil’s Mill Gorges – geological and morphological reservation from the Rarau Mountains – are stunning due to their rocky cliffs.

Lady’s Rocks – in the midst of the gorgeous scenery of the Rarau Mountains stand up spectacularly and enigmatically as some kind of “Gothic towers” made of mountain limestones. The untamed landscape, the bizarre shapes are surrounded by the mysterious haze of the legends and fairy tales. Of 70 metres height, Pietrele Doamnei (Lady’s Rocks) lay at 1634 m altitude, very close to the Rarau chalet. Together with the surrounding area, they make a complex (890 hectares) reservation that manages to attract thousands of tourists every year.

The Century old Forest from Slatioara – forestry reservation lying on the eastern slope of the Rarau Mountain (between 1800 and 1320 m altitude) is one of the oldest in Romania as well as in Europe, some of its trees ageing between 350 and 400 years. The main arborescent species are: the spruce fir, the fir tree and the beech tree.

The Putna Valley Forest – forestry reservation under on the top of Giumalau Mountain, with a rich fauna.
